How should I cast my (anger) vote?

With hardly a week ahead of my historic vote (first in my life because I got an electoral card only this year; I am 36 years old now) for a general election, I am pondering on HOW to caste my vote, and not WHOM to caste the vote.

A few days before, I read in a blog that Youth Has No Politics. I appreciate the author for recognizing this fact, which our political leaders failed to understand throughout their 50+ years in office. Politics is meant for only those who are holding on to those golden thrones.

What India (the young India) wants is not the label as a Congress-affiliate or a BJP-affiliate. What the Indian wants today is a Life to live in this country of opportunities. What they want today is a life free from exploitation.

I have great respect for Gandhi. I too respect the philosophies of Carl Marx. And there are several such political ideologies that have been formed around the world, which all focused on the development of mankind, and not their exploitation. I would have without doubt, voted for Congress or the Marxist party, had they stuck to their ideologies.

I am not in favor of BJP because it promotes Hinduism, a philosophy which any citizen of India should be ashamed of. I am not in favor of any political parties that speak on behalf of a particular community, be it Hindu, Muslim, Dalit, or OBC or the ‘Hindians’ or the Marathas. I sense all of them as perpetrators of communal violence. They are no different from the Kashmiri terrorists or the Tamil Tigers.

I hate Congress for their double standard on communal issues. While they oppose BJP for dividing the Indian community on the basis of religion, they appease the so-called OBC minority community by offering undeserving privileges, greatly eyeing on their vote bank. I was frustrated when the government passed the bill on OBC reservation in higher educational institutions.

I can feel the pain of the hard work put in by deserving candidates, and also feel ashamed of our own helplessness in helping our country grow. If the deserving candidates are expelled from IITs and IIMs because they belonged to ‘upper caste’, where is our country heading towards? Is Rahul Gandhi, the Young Prince, deaf and dumb on these issues?

I would have still cast my vote for Congress had they stuck to their political ideologies to a minimum. When they formed the last government, they were bold enough to include one of their rivals, the Marxist party, in their government, knowing that they will not be able to go ahead with their agenda with support from the extremely Utopian Marxist netas. However, it happened.

I would have decided to vote for Congress, even now, had they announced boldly what would be the form of the government after the elections- whether they will include AIADMK, CPM, BSP, SP, Trinamul Congress, TDP…….. and the list goes on. I know, not Sonia Gandhi or Manmohan Singh, even God may be unable to find an answer. Changes are happening every moment. India is going to witness the most expensive horse trading fair in the coming days……….

I would oppose the CPM for the same reason. Why can’t they stick to their political ideologies instead of forming coalition with a party pulling the boat in the opposite direction? How can development happen in India if the ruling party does not have the freedom to act upon issues and policies? What if they are scared of passing a law, for it will affect the turnover of the business ruled by their coalition partner? Embarrassing….. Pathetic…… We are simply idiots…..

This year, we see even kids are asking for votes, encouraged by the propaganda created by their favorite Bollywood stars. I appreciate their intelligence in sensing that election is a serious business for them too. Yes, it is. It is a serious business for our upcoming generation. I should not let any of these dishonest netas grab the share of our kids in our country. For the sake of my children, I decided NOT TO VOTE FOR ANY POLITICAL PARTIES.

Time is too late for the politicians to realize that Indians are growing intellectually. They can no longer be wooed by the false promises or the hilarious jokes. If they really want to see the intelligent India to come and vote, they should first make up their mind to decide which ‘ideology’ they belong to, whether they belong to the ideology of holding the office for a maximum number of years or the ideology of serving the people without any bias of caste or community.

I will miss my first election. I really feel bad about it. Suggest me a way ‘how’ I will express my anger in the ballot box.

deciding "NOT TO VOTE FOR ANY POLITICAL PARTIES." will not help believe me.

Mumbai casted only 40% votes, it is bound to suffer again as the same old people will again be elected

The best option is to choose to vote for the least corrupt person of your locality

Sitting at home and saying ‘I will not vote’ will do nothing good to the society. I dont think election commission will do any thing if we dont go and vote, except conducting the election again.

We can decide not to vote for a person who has criminal records, who is not literate, who is above 60yrs of age, who is a film star and contesting just for the heck of it… the list is endless actually. And if we adhere to it, we probably might find the right candidates.

Have you been to Bihar, Orissa, East UP or rural Bengal during elections?

During the times I have seen party cadres entering a polling booth, threatening polling officials and putting in false votes against people they are sure are not coming to vote.

Often times, at the end of the day, the party people sit with the electoral roll, see how many did not turn up, and make up for that many votes on their own.

And ofcourse there’s the world-famous Bihar politics special - booth-capturing.

Seriously, do you really think that if you don’t vote, the number of votes cast in your area will be less by 1?

Madam
It will be better if you choose one of the ideologies (Congress, BJP or Communists). It is the intermixing of different thoughts after independence responsible for this situation in India.

Elias U got it right. To abstain from voting is no solution.I feel we need to give some more powers to people to call back their representatives if they are misusing powers vested in them.We have to make representative more performance oriented.

” I am not in favor of BJP because it promotes Hinduism, a philosophy which any citizen of India should be ashamed of.”

Do you hate type of Hinduism promoted by BJP or Hinduism as it is ?

Arvind, I hate BJP for their version of Hinduism that builds temples by demolishing mosques. Being a Hindu, I also believe in Ram and Krishna, and I have read Gita too. I don’t think they inculcate hatred against non-Hindus. I respect all religions that build on humanity.

Freedom means you decide, and people fight for your right to vote or not vote and if people don’t like that than they don’t believe in freedom
WHEN SOMEONE SAYS YOU MUST YOUR NOT FREE

It really hurts me. Our ancestors struggled to get the freedom that we are (enjoying) today. You already read in some of the comments above how people of India are ‘forced’ to utilize this freedom. Do you think it will reduce in the future? No. As long as our parties support criminal politics, this will continue. My definition of freedom is to live without fear. After 60 years of independence, now we are living without freedom to live. We are living under the scare of multiple threats, all of which are created by the corrupt politicians.

What we need is an awakening. We need to launch a nationwide movement that calls for integrity among the people. People from all sectors, except the political parties, should participate in such a movement and select the ideal government based on criteria like managerial power, qualification and personal attributes, and not political background. We have so many powerful people from all sectors who are capable of taking the responsibility. We need to give them the opportunity. We are missing them because these intelligent people are not interested in politics. At least next time, we should give them a chance to form a government.

i too think in the same way as you. but do you think that by simply sitting there and not voting will of any help (execpt for some antisocial elements who will do it for you)
i voted for the person i hoped is the least corrupted of the lot.
my suggestion for you was using NO VOTE option. The lesser known provision of no-vote or protest vote has always existed in the Conduct of Elections Rules 1961 section 49 (O). (http://www.indianexpress.com/news/many-opt-for-novote-to-make-their-voices-heard/453309/)
that way you can be sure that n one else is misrepresenting you and casting your vote.

Hi Radhakrishnan,
’No Vote’ is better than not going to vote, I know. Did you read today’s news ”Congress supporting Quattrocchi and Afzal: BJP”. Whatever be the truth, any one who reads this news will be forced to think twice before voting for Congress. Both Quattrocchi and Afzal Guru are shame for Congress, and our country. If they couldn’t decide on a terrorist who attacked the Parliament, even after 8 years, how can we expect justice from them for our brothers and sisters who got killed in the serial bomb blasts?

One interesting thing i found in Gwalior(M.P) that in most of the election booth, no body knows about the provision of 49(0) in our constitution. If some body asked them regarding same then firstly the accountable person insist to cast their vote or else make a mockery of them.

pl go for the right candidate he may defect to the right party later on

i will say vote you must even if for an independent

You said it! Go for the ‘right’ candidate who may defect to the ‘right’ party later on. We will see a lot more such thamashas in the coming days. At the end of it, you will see that the party with more muscles and money will come to power because they can ‘bag’ more MPs there. Wait and see…

I am stunned hearing about the 800+ crore that is spent by our parties for advertising. No party is suffering from economic downturn. They are made richer day by day. How do they earn so much money?

We could have had a better election if we acted wisely, I know. People’s unity is the most important. I think days are not far away when we can grab what we deserve.

Like i said when someone says you must your not free ,but if called upon to defend that right to think free you must be ready to fight if called upon
You are thinking idealistic and not taking into consideration as to how us humans work
There are not any humans that won’t try to get their gens to the top once given a chance
Giving an opinion is a dictator of thought to someone else
